There were all sorts of praetors in Rome but Praetorians in Qud are probably inspired by the famous Praetorian Guard. It's got Roman or latin titles like Consul and Artifex, and its people wear togas and sandals. Ptoh is most likely Ptah, an Egyptian god who was said to have throught the world into existence and who was associated with birds (Seekers of the Sightless Way ranks are named after birds).Ĭoncerning Praetorians, I believe that Ibul is simply Roman-themed.

The Issachari and Naphtali are both tribes in old hebrew religious texts. Speaking of the Issachari, some of the names in the game have clearly been inspired by religion. Water conservation is highly relevant in all of Qud, but the Fremen from Dune based a large part of their culture around it by pure necessity. The Nomad calling getting Issachari reputation and a Recycling Suit is also an obvious Dune reference, where the desert people used stillsuits to recycle their body's moisture. It's not a Special Operator, it's a Praetorian. A specific example would be the use of obscure and archaic vernacular to describe things. Look at everyone/thing you come across, don't miss anything! One of the things I love the most about this game is how it employs some of the same literary techniques that authors of some of my favorite books use. If you're not reading the books in the game, I strongly suggest you start! Read the books, read the dialog, the shrine engravings, the item descriptions.
